St. Peter’s Senior Girls Soccer Team Win Munster Title
St. Peter’s claimed the FAI Schools Senior Girls Munster Championship (U20) following a dramatic 9–8 sudden-death penalty shootout victory over Coláiste Mhuire Askeaton, after the match finished 1–1 after extra time. The final took place at Adare Fields on Monday, 15th December.
The game ended scoreless after regular time, with both teams engaged in a highly competitive and disciplined contest, giving no quarter throughout the 90 minutes. The breakthrough came in the first half of extra time when a superb delivery from captain Lucy Finlay found Player of the Match Sarah O’Mahony, who expertly ghosted in at the back post to finish with a composed left-footed half-volley.
With just five minutes remaining in extra time, Coláiste Mhuire Askeaton equalised through an unstoppable free kick, ensuring the contest would be decided by penalties. As had been the case throughout the match, there was little to separate the sides. After twelve penalties each, St. Peter’s emerged victorious with a final score of 9–8.
A special mention must go to goalkeeper Chloe Walsh, who produced two outstanding saves during the shootout and confidently converted her own penalty to help secure the title.
St. Peter’s now look ahead to the FAI Schools National Cup Semi-Final on Thursday, 15th January, with opponents yet to be confirmed. Congratulations to the entire team and to their coach, Mr. McSweeney, on a superb achievement.
